Application
Upgrading an existing Metal Forming Machine to accommodate new features that client required.
Background
The customer acquired a press that was feeding a mill continuous strip of metal that had different shapes of punches. The mill would form the channel and feed the continuous strip to the cutting section. Parts could come in different orders. The press sends the punched part number to the controller which buffers it. When parts arrived at the cutting section, the start and cut locations were to be detected using different sensors. The first section was an embosser. Depending on the part, if required, it would emboss the hole on the fly. Then the cutter would cut the part in motion.
Technology Used
Siemens 317T CPU with Sinamics drives controller and Drives Technologies.
“Thanks for seamless, easy upgrade and precise results…”

Approach and Result
In applying Dominion Automation’s domain knowledge in these applications, we managed to exceed client requirements. In addition, a printer was used to print part numbers on all parts. The CPU would send printing data to the printer using serial communication. Depending on parts, tolerance was from 0.030” to 0.060”
